The Physics of Bridging

Join Natural Pilates Owner and Master Trainer, Laura Wilson, as she explains her approach to Bridging on the Reformer. Laura discusses the difference between Hip Rolls and Hip Lift, as well as the forces acting on the body in these exercises — notably the interaction between spring tension and gravity. With less resistance, there is less compression, which translates to less support for the weight of the body. Laura reviews the changes that occur when adjusting resistance from heavy to light and how it impacts the effect of gravity on the body. It is important to remember that the resistance must be appropriate for the body mass of each individual client. Our goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind the forces and the movement, so that we can better modify Pilates exercises for our clients.
